The Everything Get Published Book by Peter Rubie

This book is truly "everything," or as close as it comes to getting everything about publishing between two covers. Peter Rubie, who has himself been an editor, author and literary agent, is well qualified to write this book, which he does with authority, style and more than a little humor.
Rubie covers all the bases, and leaves nothing assumed. He even begins with a detailed discussion of what makes a viable book. In his chapter on fiction writing, he discusses what makes a solid story, while in his chapters on non-fiction writing, he explores how to organize one's discussion of a topic.
However, he does not stop there. Rubie deals with how to study the market and determine what is saleable, how to translate the idea into a book proposal that will attract the attention of an editor, and the process of guiding the manuscript through the hoops of the publishing industry to the shelves.
For instance, he tackles the question of why one should get an agent, and how to recognize a good agent, as opposed to a scam agent (and yes, they are out there). In addition, he provides information on how publishing works and how to read a contract so you won't get burned, and what different kinds of rights and royalties are. In addition, he discusses the various aspects of publicizing a book.
Rubie closes the book with an extensive list of book publishers, ranging from the huge conglomerates to small presses and university presses that may be more receptive to a book that will appeal to only a relatively narrow audience.
